Let’s talk IN CONVERSATION WITH QILIN CAI

Luxury retail is constantly evolving. Physical retail spaces today must do more than showcase products – they must translate brand values, heritage and craftsmanship into experiences that resonate with customers. From immersive visual merchandising to carefully orchestrated brand campaigns, the retail environment has become one of the most powerful touchpoints for emotional
storytelling.

Qilin has been shaping global brand and retail experiences for some of the most recognised names in fashion, sportswear and luxury. Across his roles at Tommy Hilfiger, On, Akris and Gübelin, he has continuously explored how brands can create meaningful and memorable experiences at the point of sale — spaces where identity becomes tangible through light, materiality, proportion
and atmosphere.

Together with partners such as DFROST Retail Identity, these experiences come to life through spatial concepts, visual storytelling and carefully crafted retail environments. What starts as a creative vision becomes a physical experience through dialogue, precision and a shared commitment to detail.

Today we are talking to Qilin about the evolving role of retail experiences, the importance of creative consistency across brand touchpoints and what makes successful collaborations between brands and creative partners.

QILIN, IT’S GREAT TO HAVE YOU WITH US TODAY.
YOU HAVE WORKED WITH SOME OF THE MOST ICONIC GLOBAL BRANDS IN FASHION AND LUXURY. LOOKING BACK AT YOUR JOURNEY – FROM CHRISTIAN DIOR, RALPH LAUREN, TOMMY HILFIGER TO ON RUNNING, AKRIS AND GÜBELIN. WHAT FASCINATES YOU MOST ABOUT SHAPING BRAND EXPERIENCES IN RETAIL?

When I look back at my journey across Christian Dior, Ralph Lauren, On A.G…., what has always fascinated me is that retail is where a brand stops being an idea and becomes something people can physically step into.
A retail space is incredibly honest. You cannot hide behind marketing language or visuals on a screen. Everything — the light, the materials, the proportions, the atmosphere — communicates what the brand truly stands for. I’ve always been drawn to this challenge of translating identity into something spatial and tangible.

RETAIL TODAY IS MUCH MORE THAN A POINT OF SALE. HOW DO YOU SEE THE ROLE OF PHYSICAL RETAIL SPACES EVOLVING FOR LUXURY BRANDS?

I see retail increasingly becoming a stage for brand storytelling rather than a place for transactions. Especially in luxury, clients are not coming only to purchase something — they are coming to experience the world of the brand. The role of the space is to create an emotional memory. Something that stays with people long after they leave. The store becomes a sensory and cultural expression of the brand’s values, heritage, and vision.

YOU HAVE WORKED ACROSS DIFFERENT INDUSTRIES – FROM FASHION TO SPORTSWEAR TO LUXURY JEWELLERY. WHAT ARE THE KEY PRINCIPLES THAT REMAIN CONSTANT WHEN DESIGNING STRONG BRAND EXPERIENCES?

No matter the industry, a few principles always remain the same for me. First, absolute clarity about what the brand stands for. Without that, no space can feel authentic. Then, consistency in how this identity is expressed across every touchpoint. And finally, a deep respect for detail. Very often it’s the smallest elements that carry the strongest message. I also always think about how people will move through and feel within a space, not just how it looks.

VISUAL MERCHANDISING AND SPATIAL STORYTELLING HAVE BECOME ESSENTIAL TOOLS FOR BRANDS. HOW IMPORTANT IS CREATIVE CONSISTENCY ACROSS ALL TOUCHPOINTS, FROM CAMPAIGN TO STORE WINDOW TO INTERIOR SPACE?

For me, consistency is what makes a brand recognizable without needing to see a logo. The campaign, the window, the store, the event — they should all feel like different chapters of the same story. When these elements are disconnected, the brand starts to lose credibility. The real strength is when every environment feels unique, yet unmistakably the same brand.

IN YOUR CREATIVE ROLES WITH SWISS LUXURY BRANDS SUCH AS AKRIS AND GÜBELIN, HOW DO YOU TRANSLATE HERITAGE, CRAFTSMANSHIP AND PRECISION INTO VISUAL AND SPATIAL EXPERIENCES?

With Akris and Gübelin, a lot comes down to restraint and precision. The brand’s values are not expressed through loud statements but through materiality, light, proportion, and subtle details. The spaces need to reflect the same level of care and craftsmanship that you find in the products. It’s about creating an atmosphere that feels calm, refined, and very intentional.

IN PROJECTS SUCH AS WINDOW INSTALLATIONS OR RETAIL EXPERIENCES, YOUR IDEAS OFTEN START FROM A VERY CONCEPTUAL PLACE. WHAT DOES IT TAKE TO TRANSLATE THESE CONCEPTS SUCCESSFULLY INTO A PHYSICAL RETAIL EXPERIENCE TOGETHER WITH A PARTNER LIKE DFROST?

It really starts with a shared understanding of the brand intent before we even speak about execution. The best collaborations happen when partners think creatively with you, not only technically for you. A lot of success lies in the attention to detail during production. This is where concepts either come to life beautifully or lose their strength. Open dialogue and mutual trust are essential to challenge ideas and achieve the best possible result.

BEYOND THE CREATIVE WORK AND TECHNICAL SIDE ITSELF, LONG-TERM COLLABORATIONS ARE OFTEN SHAPED BY THE PEOPLE BEHIND THE PROJECTS. WHAT STANDS OUT TO YOU WHEN WORKING WITH THE DFROST TEAM AND THE PEOPLE YOU COLLABORATE WITH ON A DAY-TO-DAY BASIS?

What stands out is a genuine care for quality and detail, and the ability to quickly understand the creative vision behind a project. There is also a strong sense of reliability and a solution-oriented mindset, even when timelines are tight. It feels less like working with an external supplier and more like working with an extension of the internal creative team.

LUXURY RETAIL IS OFTEN ABOUT SUBTLETY, CRAFTSMANSHIP AND ATTENTION TO DETAIL. HOW DO YOU BALANCE INNOVATION AND EXPERIMENTATION WITH THE TIMELESS ELEGANCE THAT LUXURY BRANDS STAND FOR?

For me, innovation should always enhance the brand’s values, not distract from them. Experimentation often happens in material choices, light, and spatial storytelling rather than loud visual gestures. The goal is to create something that feels contemporary but still timeless. Very often, restraint is more powerful than complexity.

LOOKING AHEAD – WHAT TRENDS DO YOU SEE SHAPING THE FUTURE OF LUXURY RETAIL EXPERIENCES IN THE COMING YEARS?

I believe we will see more immersive and sensory environments that focus on emotional connection rather than visual impact alone. There will also be a stronger integration between physical space and digital storytelling, as well as a growing emphasis on craftsmanship, sustainability, and material authenticity. Retail spaces will increasingly become cultural touch-points where brands express their philosophy, not just present their products.

QILIN, THANK YOU FOR THIS INSPIRING EXCHANGE. IT’S ALWAYS A PLEASURE TO WORK WITH CREATIVE PARTNERS WHO SHARE THE SAME PASSION FOR CRAFTSMANSHIP, PRECISION AND MEANINGFUL BRAND EXPERIENCES. WE LOOK FORWARD TO THE IDEAS, CHALLENGES AND PROJECTS THAT LIE AHEAD AND TO CONTINUING THIS JOURNEY TOGETHER. HAPPY TO BE ON YOUR SIDE. YOUR BRAND COMPANIONS.
