IN THIS JOB TALK, WE SPEAK WITH OLIVIA, AN ART DIRECTOR AT DFROST. SHE STUDIED GRAPHIC DESIGN AND STARTED HER CAREER IN PRINT AND WEB DESIGN BEFORE EXPANDING INTO BRAND EXPERIENCE. DRAWN TO DFROST FOR ITS CREATIVE CULTURE AND INNOVATIVE APPROACH, SHE NOW PLAYS A KEY ROLE IN DEVELOPING VISUAL CONCEPTS, TRANSLATING BRAND IDENTITIES INTO IMPACTFUL DESIGNS. OLIVIA SHARES INSIGHTS INTO HER DAILY WORK, THE CHALLENGES OF BALANCING CREATIVITY AND PRACTICALITY, AND HOW AI SHAPES MODERN DESIGN PROCESSES.
Olivia, you have been with DFROST since the summer of 2023. Could you please introduce yourself and tell us why you decided to join DFROST?

I studied graphic design in school and initially worked in an agency, focusing on print design and websites. Over time, I wanted to explore new areas within the industry, which led me to DFROST Retail Identity. It was important for me to find a company that not only strives for excellence but also fosters a positive culture where creativity and fresh ideas are truly valued. DFROST checked all those boxes, and I’m grateful to be part of this inspiring team.

The position of an Art Director varies from agency to agency. What is a typical working day for you as an Art Director at DFROST?

Every morning, we kick off with a team meeting to align on responsibilities for the coming days. After that, it’s time for our first coffee before diving into our projects. I work closely with our Creative Directors, developing concepts for our clients and refining them until we’re ready to produce the final print data. No two days are the same—some are dedicated to research and brainstorming initial ideas, while others focus on finalizing details, creating production-ready files, and coordinating closely with the client to perfect every aspect.

What are your main duties and responsibilities as an Art Director?

As an Art Director, I am responsible for the visual design and execution of creative concepts, ensuring they align with the brand identity. We develop visual strategies and collaborate closely with our clients to meet their needs effectively. Working hand in hand with project managers, we keep everything on schedule, discussing design visions and their feasibility in production. To ensure consistency and alignment within the team, I also conduct internal training sessions, sharing insights and best practices. If my colleagues have technical questions or need support with their layouts, I’m always available to assist.

You work closely with the creative directors in the development of new concepts, the implementation of layouts for our clients and the creation of print data. Can you tell us more about how this process works?

When starting a new project, we first immerse ourselves in the client’s brand and values. After discussing the brief, we explore implementation options and develop initial ideas, refining them into concepts that align with the client’s vision and add value. Once a direction is chosen, we create detailed layouts and work closely with project managers and producers to ensure a smooth and seamless execution.

What are the biggest challenges you face as an art director?
One of the biggest challenges is balancing creative vision with practical constraints, often requiring compromise. Constant communication with project managers and producers demands flexibility to adapt to evolving needs. Additionally, ensuring that designs stay innovative, brand-compliant, and aligned with client expectations requires attention to detail and strategic thinking.
What has been your favorite project so far? And why?

My favorite project so far has been employer branding for the Schwarz Group. It was an exciting opportunity to develop a fresh concept and bring it to life for a trade fair stand—my first major task at DFROST. I gained invaluable experience, especially during the production phase, where optimizing processes for producers was crucial. With the support and guidance of my colleagues, we delivered a well-executed and thoughtfully detailed project.

Do you use AI in your day-to-day work and how do you feel about AI-generated content in marketing?

AI streamlines many design processes, and I primarily use it in Photoshop for faster image retouching. It also helps me gather information quickly without the need for extensive research. While AI-generated content enhances efficiency in campaign creation, it often lacks the personal touch that makes a project truly unique. For me, the design process is where creativity and individuality take shape—something AI can overlook due to its speed and lack of human collaboration. That’s why I see AI as a supportive tool rather than a replacement. The real magic happens when AI is combined with human creativity, resulting in campaigns that are innovative, authentic, and truly engaging.

How would you describe the culture at DFROST and how does it contribute to the success of the entire team? We call our team Brand Companions. What makes us special as a team?

At DFROST, we call ourselves Brand Companions—a name that reflects our strong sense of teamwork and shared purpose. Open communication is at the heart of our culture, where questions are always welcome, and support is a given. Beyond work, we value personal connections, often coming together outside the office to strengthen our relationships. Each team member brings unique strengths, making us a dynamic and resilient group, ready to take on any challenge. This strong sense of unity and collaboration drives our success and fuels our creativity.

What skills, knowledge, and tools have you developed during your time at DFROST that help you stay organized and efficient in your daily work?

I’ve learned the importance of asking questions to fully understand customer and colleague expectations, ensuring efficient and clear communication. I’ve also developed strong organizational and prioritization skills, which help me stay focused and deliver quality results, even under pressure. To stay organized, I rely on my notebook, which stores all essential information and allows me to create clear to-do lists that help me prioritize tasks. Another crucial tool is my headphones and music, which create a calming environment and help me stay focused, minimizing distractions, especially during busy times in the office.

You’re studying alongside your work. What motivated you to pursue further education, and how does DFROST support you in balancing both?

I believe there’s always something new to learn, and continuous education is essential for improving efficiency in my daily tasks. Staying updated through training allows me to explore new technologies and techniques. DFROST’s flexible hours and the option to work from home enable me to maintain a healthy work-life balance, using my free time to focus on personal development.

Do you have any advice or tips for someone who wants to pursue a career as an art director at DFROST?

My advice would be to be bold and take the leap, even if the role doesn’t follow the traditional advertising path you might expect. You’ll be welcomed with open arms and supported as you settle into the role. Let your creativity and innovation shine through in your portfolio and don’t be afraid to think outside the box or explore new ideas.
