Let’s sit down AND TALK WITH AURÉLIE

IN THIS JOB TALK, WE SPEAK WITH AURÉLIE, A RETAIL DESIGNER AT DFROST. SHE STUDIED RETAIL DESIGN AT THE PETER BEHRENS SCHOOL OF ART AT THE HS DÜSSELDORF. AFTER GRADUATING DURING THE CORONA PANDEMIC, SHE STARTED AT DFROST IN PROJECT MANAGEMENT. A YEAR LATER, SHE DISCOVERED HER TRUE PASSION FOR CREATION AND 3D DESIGN AND LATER MOVED TO OUR CREATIVE DEPARTMENT. FOR THE PAST TWO YEARS, AURÉLIE HAS ENRICHED OUR TEAM AS A RETAIL DESIGNER, WHERE SHE DEVELOPS INSPIRING SPATIAL CONCEPTS AND LETS HER CREATIVITY RUN FREE.
AURÉLIE, YOU HAVE NOW BEEN WITH DFROST FOR THREE YEARS AND STARTED HERE DIRECTLY AFTER YOUR STUDIES AS A PROJECT MANAGER IN RETAIL DESIGN. HOW WAS YOUR TRANSITION FROM UNIVERSITY TO DFROST AND WHAT EXPERIENCES DID YOU GATHER IN YOUR FIRST YEARS?

The transition from university to DFROST was an exciting and educational time for me. Although numbers and data are not necessarily my favorite tasks, starting in project management was a valuable experience that gave me a comprehensive insight into the projects. Before my time at DFROST, I thought that working in a creative agency mainly consisted of concepts and creative work. However, I quickly realized that the role of a project manager involves much more. Through project management, I brought a lot of reality and structure into my work and acquired extensive production knowledge. This time was very educational for me, as I developed organizational skills and stress resistance. Additionally, I learned to think and act in a solution-oriented manner, which is invaluable for my professional development.

WHAT DOES A TYPICAL WORKDAY LOOK LIKE FOR YOU AS A RETAIL DESIGNER AT DFROST?

A typical workday as a Retail Designer at DFROST begins with our morning meeting, followed by a relaxing breakfast. After that, I check my emails to stay updated and make sure I don’t miss any important news or updates. Then, I usually open my 3D program and dive into creative work with my music playing . 3D design is my absolute highlight because it allows me to let my creativity run free and work on the most exciting projects.

YOU TAKE ON MANY INTERNAL TASKS AND ARE ALSO HAPPY TO STEP IN AS A PROJECT MANAGER WHEN NEEDED. CAN YOU TELL US MORE ABOUT THE INTERNAL TASKS YOU HANDLE AND HOW YOU MANAGE THESE VERSATILE ROLES?

Through my experience in project management, I gained a holistic view of our projects and discovered how much I enjoy organizing and planning. One of my main tasks was collaborating with our managing director Christoph on the expansion and design of our office spaces and the DFROST Space. I tackled this challenge with a lot of support from Christoph and learned a lot in the process. Balancing internal tasks and stepping in as a project manager is possible through continuous personal development. The support of the team and the freedom to make mistakes—but not the same ones twice—were crucial. I learned to not let stress affect me and that the world doesn’t end if something doesn’t work out. It was important to ask for help when I didn’t know what to do next and to always remain curious and eager to learn. Being an all-rounder in the team allows me to be approachable and provide support to everyone. This versatile role is particularly enjoyable for me because it allows me to actively contribute to the team’s success while continuing to develop my own skills.

WHAT ARE YOUR MAIN TASKS AND RESPONSIBILITIES IN YOUR ROLE AS A RETAIL DESIGNER?

As a Retail Designer at DFROST, my primary task is to design spatial concepts. I formulate our ideas and translate them into concrete spatial designs. When needed, I also take on development planning and support project management, especially during the production phase. My responsibilities include overseeing the implementation of the concepts, creating and reviewing production plans. These varied tasks allow me to utilize both my creative and organizational skills to ensure the precise and successful execution of our concepts.

WHICH PROJECT HAS BEEN THE MOST EXCITING FOR YOU AND WHY? AND IS THERE A PROJECT YOU ARE PARTICULARLY PROUD OF?

The project that I enjoyed the most so far was the development of the DFROST Space. It was incredibly exciting and motivating to constantly learn new things, push my limits, and keep developing. This project showed me that there’s always more to learn and room for growth and development. A project I am particularly proud of is the work for Longines. These were my largest and most high-profile projects, in which I was involved as a project manager and on-site support. A lot of heart and soul went into these projects. It was an enormous challenge, but seeing everything come together and realizing what we achieved through dedication is priceless.

YOU ARE QUITE »VERSATILE« WITHIN THE DFROST TEAM AND WORK WITHIN ALMOST ALL DEPARTMENTS. HOW WOULD YOU DESCRIBE THE COMPANY CULTURE AT DFROST AND HOW DOES IT CONTRIBUTE TO THE OVERALL TEAM’S SUCCESS? WE CALL OUR TEAM THE BRAND COMPANIONS. WHAT MAKES US SPECIAL AS A TEAM?

Through my diverse roles in the DFROST team, I gain valuable insights into all departments. This collaboration fosters holistic thinking and highlights the importance of continuous exchange between project management and creation. Our company culture is characterized by openness and active communication. We value feedback and look for mistakes in ourselves to continually improve our processes. As Brand Companions, we are not just colleagues but often friends. Shared lunch breaks, events, and after-work activities create a positive work atmosphere. Everyone is highly skilled in their area, and there is always someone to turn to for advice. This culture of support and constant learning defines our team and significantly contributes to the company’s success.

YOU HAVE ALREADY WORKED IN TWO AREAS HERE AT DFROST, PROJECT MANAGEMENT AND NOW YOUR FOCUS IS ON RETAIL DESIGN. WHAT DO YOU THINK ARE THE ADVANTAGES AND BENEFITS DFROST OFFERS ITS EMPLOYEES TO DEVELOP AND GROW IN THEIR ROLES?

DFROST offers many advantages and benefits that allow everyone to develop and grow in their roles. Through my experience in both project management and retail design, I particularly appreciate the insights into conception and the trial-and-error culture. Here, you are allowed to make mistakes, which greatly promotes the learning process. It’s also valuable that you are entrusted with projects and can work independently, supported by review and feedback loops even after project completion. DFROST invests in improving perceived weaknesses and encourages personal development, for example through optional training and internal one-to-one coaching. This culture of responsibility and support enables everyone to continuously develop and grow.

WHAT SKILLS AND KNOWLEDGE HAVE YOU ACQUIRED IN THE LAST THREE YEARS AT DFROST THAT WILL SHAPE YOUR FUTURE?

Over the past three years at DFROST, I have acquired many skills and knowledge that will have a lasting impact on me. I’ve learned the importance of organization and planning, and how to keep a cool head in stressful situations and when problems arise. Solution-oriented thinking and acting have become a fundamental part of my work style, especially when projects become difficult and challenging.

I’ve learned the importance of following-up and staying on top of various projects. Another key learning area has been double-checking all details, as no one is error-free. The phrase »Wer schreibt, der bleibt« has become a mantra for ensuring documentation and follow-ups.

Even in turbulent times, I’ve learned to stay positive and as calm as possible. From every experience, I draw valuable lessons that advance me both professionally and personally.

You are planning to start your master’s degree. How did this dream come about and what do you hope to learn from this opportunity?

The desire to start my master’s degree arose mainly from the renovation and expansion of our own retail space. This experience was completely new to me, and I learned an incredible amount—from proper architectural planning to new programs and processes. The input from our partners who supported us during the renovation was particularly valuable. This sparked my interest in knowing more, learning more, and being able to do more.

Since I don’t come from a classic interior architecture background, this practical experience was especially exciting and valuable for me. It was a great opportunity to experiment, learn, and make mistakes, always with the support of the team. This experience triggered my decision to pursue a master’s degree and specialize in Interior Architecture.

WHAT INSPIRES YOU IN YOUR DAILY LIFE THAT INFLUENCES YOUR WORK? WHERE DO YOU GET YOUR INSPIRATION FROM?

I draw my inspiration from many sources, primarily from social media. It may sound a bit cliché, but while browsing and scrolling, I constantly find new ideas and suggestions. My feed is full of inspiring content that I wouldn’t want to miss.

Besides social media, my leisure activities also inspire me. Walks during lunch breaks with my colleagues, the exchange and coordination with the team and our partners are incredibly enriching. I believe that you can find inspiration in everything you see and experience. Every experience, every moment can be a source of creativity.

IS THERE SOMETHING INTERESTING OR UNUSUAL ABOUT YOUR JOB OR DFROST THAT NOT EVERYONE KNOWS BUT SHOULD?

Yes! For example, you can tell Christoph’s mood from the music he plays at breakfast in the morning! And there’s never a shortage of butter and candy. Many of our colleagues are also avid audiobook listeners and love to share their latest finds. And if you’re ever stuck, you can always count on Eva—she always has great ideas and solutions to help. Everyone contributes in their own way to a dynamic and supportive working environment at DFROST.
